A city, at your own pace

Beijing 北京

Beijing beyond the palace gates

Give the capital enough room to reveal its contrasts: ceremonial courtyards, lived-in lanes, generous parks and contemporary art. This balanced introduction connects the major monuments with smaller neighbourhood moments, using one substantial visit each day instead of treating Beijing as a checklist.

01 / The journey

Read the imperial city slowly

Reserve a morning for the Forbidden City and choose a few galleries that match your interests. Its long ceremonial axis provides the framework, but doorways, painted beams and side courtyards reward closer attention. Continue to a nearby park only if energy allows. Palace visits involve considerable walking, so a relaxed lunch matters more than fitting in another distant monument.

02 / The journey

Find everyday Beijing

Pair the Temple of Heaven with an unhurried walk through its surrounding park, keeping performances and exercise groups as everyday activities rather than staged attractions. In hutong neighbourhoods, stay on public lanes and avoid photographing residents through doorways. A noodle lunch and a tea break create useful pauses between the large spaces that often define a first visit to Beijing.

03 / The journey

Choose one wider-city contrast

The Summer Palace offers lakeside routes and painted corridors, while 798 presents industrial buildings adapted for art and design. Choose the option that suits the weather and your interests instead of crossing the entire city between them. A Great Wall excursion deserves its own day, with the wall section selected for walking ability, transport needs and the amount of climbing desired.

The flavors of a place

At the table.

Share roast duck for one deliberate sit-down meal, then explore zhajiangmian or dumplings at another. Bean sauces and vegetable dishes can contain meat stock; explain dietary needs before ordering, not only when the food arrives.

Make the day yours

Before you go.

Build the itinerary around confirmed monument reservations and carry the identity document used to book. Metro journeys can still involve long station walks. Summer heat and winter wind change the pace substantially; leave a flexible indoor option and verify holiday access before finalising each day.

This is a planning guide, not a live availability report. Confirm opening arrangements, reservations, transport, access rules and dietary needs before travelling.
