Dali, between the old town and the open lake
Dali offers an appealing change of pace between city journeys, with old streets, mountain backdrops and the broad water of Erhai. Resist the urge to circle everything. Choose a comfortable base, explore one side of the lake and leave enough time for a village visit or a long, unhurried meal.

Explore before the shopping streets take over
Dali Old Town is a good place to begin with a small walking loop, looking beyond the busiest commercial lanes. The Three Pagodas provide a separate architectural anchor and a strong relationship with the mountain backdrop. Allow time for the grounds and interpretation rather than only a distant photograph. Keep the first day modest if you have arrived after a long journey or are still adjusting to the elevation.
Choose one stretch of Erhai
A lake outing is more pleasant when the plan centres on a particular shore, village or path instead of completing a full circuit. Check which sections allow walking or cycling and respect traffic and environmental restrictions. Wind and sun can make the day more demanding than it looks. Stop for a meal and return before fatigue turns the final part of the route into an obligation.
Give villages and mountains their own time
A visit to a Bai village can add context through architecture, markets and craft, provided homes and working spaces are approached respectfully. Ask before photographing people or joining an activity. Cangshan is a different outing with altitude, trail and transport considerations, so do not treat it as a casual add-on. Choose either the village or mountain emphasis for a short stay, leaving the other for a longer return.
At the table.
Rushan cheese is a distinctive Dali snack, served in different sweet or savoury forms. Try a simple Bai-style shared meal as well, asking about dairy, chillies and preserved ingredients instead of assuming unfamiliar dishes are mild.
Before you go.
Dali’s modern urban area and the old town are separate bases, so confirm the actual accommodation address and transfer. Check mountain trail and cableway notices before travelling. Use sun protection, carry layers and avoid planning a long lake ride without considering wind, road rules and your fitness.
