Jiaxing 嘉兴
Jiaxing and the water towns beyond the centre
Jiaxing works as a gentle introduction to northern Zhejiang, with an urban lake, local food and several well-known water towns in the wider municipality. The important choice is where to spend your time. Separate a central-city day from an overnight in one water town instead of collecting bridges across several distant districts.

Start with a city-sized day
A walk around part of South Lake introduces Jiaxing at an easy pace. Choose the shore or island visit that interests you, checking any separate transport or admission arrangements first. Follow with a local lunch and a modest neighbourhood walk. The lake does not need to be a quick transfer stop between famous towns; giving it a calm afternoon makes the central city feel like a destination.
Choose one water town deliberately
Wuzhen and Xitang have different layouts and access arrangements, and they are not neighbouring streets of Jiaxing. Pick one according to your preferred atmosphere, accommodation and onward route. Wuzhen itself has separate visitor areas, so confirm which district a hotel or ticket refers to. An overnight stay can reduce the pressure to see everything at once, although popular evening lanes may still be busy and commercial.
Find detail beyond the main bridge
In a water town, alternate the most familiar viewpoints with quieter permitted lanes, small museums or a seated break beside a canal. Watch how buildings meet the water and how covered passages connect shops and homes. Do not enter residential doorways simply because they look picturesque. Photography is more rewarding when the route has room to pause without blocking a bridge or interrupting people at work.
At the table.
Jiaxing is closely associated with zongzi, glutinous-rice parcels with savoury or sweet fillings. Try a small selection rather than assuming the leaf identifies its contents. Pork, salted egg, beans and nuts require different dietary checks.
Before you go.
Jiaxing South, Tongxiang and Jiashan South suit different destinations. Choose the town first, then the station and transfer, rather than treating every Jiaxing-area stop as equivalent. Confirm late return transport or book a suitable overnight base before committing to an evening canal walk.
