Leshan 乐山
Leshan, more than a photograph of the Buddha
Leshan deserves time on both sides of its best-known sight. Plan how you want to see the Giant Buddha, then add a riverside evening and a few small food stops. Staying overnight can turn a rushed excursion from Chengdu into a more relaxed visit with room for changing conditions.

Choose the viewing experience first
A land-based visit and a boat view of the Giant Buddha offer different perspectives and different practical demands. The land route can involve stairs and queues, while boat operations depend on conditions. Check current access before deciding rather than assuming all routes will be available. Allow time for the surrounding religious and landscape context, not only the familiar frontal image of the carved figure.
Stay for an ordinary evening
After the main sight, return to the city for a riverside walk and a meal instead of immediately rushing back to Chengdu. A modest overnight stay makes it easier to separate the attraction from the food exploration. Choose a compact neighbourhood with several options and order small portions. The point is to enjoy the contrasts in texture and seasoning, not to prove that every famous snack can fit into one sitting.
Decide if Mount Emei needs another trip
Mount Emei is often paired with Leshan on a map, but it involves a separate mountain plan and potentially a different overnight base. Add it only with enough time for transfers, walking and weather. If the visit is short, keep the focus on Leshan and its river setting. Giving one place proper attention is a stronger itinerary than treating a major mountain as an afternoon extension.
At the table.
Boboji skewers and qiaojiao beef offer two distinct Leshan meals. Ask about chilli oil, offal and how dishes are served, and use small orders to keep room for another taste without overcommitting to a large shared spread.
Before you go.
Confirm the current Buddha visit routes, boat operations and physical demands before buying tickets. River conditions can change access, and narrow stairs may not suit everyone. Leave a generous gap before an onward train, particularly if the plan depends on completing a queued route.
