Shanghai 上海
Shanghai, one neighbourhood at a time
Shanghai becomes easier to enjoy when its skyline is only the beginning. Connect a riverfront walk with garden courtyards, shaded residential streets and a proper sit-down meal. This compact city break balances the recognisable views with enough unplanned time to notice everyday life between them.

Give the river a whole evening
Begin around the Bund before dusk, when the historic waterfront and the towers across the Huangpu are both readable. Walk a manageable section instead of trying to cover every landmark. On a separate outing, see the river from Pudong to reverse the perspective. Leave space between dinner and any booked viewpoint; river crossings and station exits can add more walking than the map suggests.
Pair a garden with a quieter street
Yu Garden offers an introduction to carefully framed views, rockeries and courtyard transitions. The surrounding commercial lanes feel quite different, so treat them as a second experience rather than the whole old city. Another half-day can follow the leafy streets around Xuhui, with a museum or small exhibition as an anchor. Choose just one indoor stop and let the neighbourhood supply the rest.
Make the last day personal
Design, art, architecture and family attractions pull a Shanghai itinerary in different directions. Pick the interest that matters most to your group instead of adding an obligatory checklist. A museum session followed by a long lunch can be more rewarding than two distant attractions. If a theme park is the priority, give it its own day and stay realistic about the journey back.
At the table.
Try shengjian for a crisp-bottomed breakfast, xiaolongbao for a slower snack, and a shared Shanghai-style meal later. Dumpling soup is hot; fillings and sauces may contain pork, shellfish, soy or wheat.
Before you go.
Shanghai has several major stations and two airports. Save the exact departure terminal and station in Chinese, and keep your final day on the appropriate side of the city. Check the current reservation process and location for each museum before leaving your hotel.
