Shaoguan 韶关
Shaoguan between temple courtyards and Danxia cliffs
Shaoguan introduces a greener, hillier side of Guangdong, with important religious heritage and the red-rock scenery of Danxia. The major attractions lie outside the city in different directions. Use a comfortable base and give each excursion its own day, leaving the evenings for local meals instead of another long transfer.

Choose your Danxia route carefully
The Danxia scenic landscape includes several distinct routes and approaches rather than one uninterrupted summit path. Pick an area with walking demands that suit the group and understand how internal transport connects the entrances. Steps can be steep, and wet rock needs caution. A clear-weather viewpoint is a possibility, not a promise; give the day room for rests instead of using every available hour to cover more ground.
Give Nanhua Temple a separate visit
Nanhua Temple provides a different focus through its place in Chan Buddhist history and its active religious life. It is not next door to the Danxia landscape, so group it with a relaxed city day or its own excursion. Read a little context before arriving and respect notices around halls and photography. The value lies in the architecture, setting and tradition rather than completing a sequence of quick stops.
Keep the city evening uncomplicated
After an outdoor day, a short public riverside walk and a sit-down meal can be enough. Shaoguan’s urban centre is useful for transport and everyday shopping, without needing to imitate the pace of a major coastal metropolis. Choose accommodation according to the next morning’s direction. An extra countryside destination is best treated as another day, not squeezed into the gap between returning from the mountain and dinner.
At the table.
Explore northern Guangdong through simple shared plates, rice and soup, with local vegetables where available. Preparations may be richer or more strongly seasoned than expected from coastal Cantonese menus. Ask about bones, preserved ingredients and chilli before ordering.
Before you go.
Shaoguan station and Shaoguan East serve different rail services. Confirm the exact arrival point and road transfer to your hotel or scenic base. Check mountain weather and trail notices, carry water and rain protection, and leave a generous margin before any onward train.
