Ürümqi 乌鲁木齐
Ürümqi before the long road west
Use Ürümqi to gain context before travelling across Xinjiang’s enormous distances. Museum collections, a city walk and carefully chosen meals can make a useful first chapter. Keep mountain scenery as a separate outing and verify travel arrangements in advance, especially when the wider route approaches border areas or remote districts.

Start with a regional introduction
Xinjiang Museum helps frame the region’s archaeology, exchange routes and diverse communities before an onward journey. Choose a focused set of galleries and check current exhibition availability rather than assuming a specific display is always open. Allow time to read the context of objects instead of treating them as isolated curiosities. A quieter museum-based day can also be useful after a long arrival.
Explore commerce without staging everyday life
A visit to the bazaar area can introduce food shops and the scale of a major regional city. Take the commercial setting for what it is rather than expecting an untouched historical market. Ask permission before close portraits, keep residential entrances clear and respect places of worship. A sit-down meal offers a better opportunity to understand a few dishes than a hurried sweep through every stall.
Choose one mountain contrast
Tianshan Heavenly Lake lies outside Ürümqi near Fukang and should be planned as a full excursion with weather and transport in mind. Mountain conditions differ from the city, and clear views are never guaranteed. Choose a manageable authorised route and retain a city alternative. Kanas and Kashgar are much farther away and belong to separate stages of a Xinjiang itinerary, not extra afternoon stops.
At the table.
Polo, laghman and big-plate chicken are distinct meals rather than a single tasting order. Ask how many people a portion serves and confirm meat, wheat and chilli. Respect halal requirements where observed, including restrictions on bringing outside food or alcohol.
Before you go.
Use the officially stated time for trains, flights and reservations, and clarify meeting times directly with local providers. Carry required identification and verify accommodation eligibility, site access and any permit rules for the exact onward route. Do not assume border or remote-area access is the same as access to Ürümqi.
