A city, at your own pace

Xiamen 厦门

Xiamen at the pace of the shoreline

Xiamen combines an island excursion with a city that is pleasant to explore in smaller pieces. Give Gulangyu a proper day, then use coastal walks and neighbourhood meals to fill the rest. The best itinerary leaves breathing room for sea air, interesting buildings and the practicalities of moving between islands.

01 / The journey

Make Gulangyu the main event

Arrange the appropriate ferry before setting out and allow time at the departure terminal. Once on Gulangyu, select a walking loop that includes quieter lanes as well as the recognisable streets. Hills, steps and branching paths make a small island feel larger on foot. A single museum or historic building is enough to anchor the day, leaving time to notice the variety of houses around it.

02 / The journey

Explore the city without island-hopping

On the main urban island, combine an older shopping area with a nearby meal and an easy waterfront walk. Zhongshan Road provides a busy introduction, while smaller streets can make useful detours when the main route feels crowded. Choose one district for each half-day. Trying to connect every coastal viewpoint, temple and café in a single outing turns an otherwise relaxed city into a transport exercise.

03 / The journey

Keep a coastal afternoon open

The coastal paths are best enjoyed as a short section selected for shade, access and your group’s energy. Pause when conditions are comfortable rather than forcing a long ride or walk in heat. If a temple visit is part of the plan, follow local dress and photography guidance and leave worship areas undisturbed. An indoor exhibition or longer lunch is a perfectly reasonable alternative to wind or rain.

The flavors of a place

At the table.

Try shacha noodles and an oyster omelette as separate small meals rather than ordering everything at once. Shacha sauces may contain seafood or peanuts, and broths can include meat even when the visible toppings are vegetables.

Make the day yours

Before you go.

Different ferry routes and terminals serve different passengers and purposes, so verify the exact Gulangyu booking instructions for your trip. Carry the identification linked to reservations. Strong winds and storms can affect sailings; avoid an island visit immediately before a tight train or flight connection.
