Zhangye offers a rewarding Silk Road stop when its city heritage receives as much attention as the Danxia landscape. Begin with the Great Buddha Temple, then reserve a separate outing for the colourful hills. A spare morning makes room for weather, photography and the practical distances of the Hexi Corridor.

Start inside the city
The Great Buddha Temple provides a quieter historical introduction before the open landscapes outside Zhangye. Focus on the relationship between the reclining Buddha, the hall and the surrounding complex, following all interior photography rules. An unhurried visit helps place the city within the movement of religion and trade along the corridor. Pair it with a simple lunch rather than immediately setting off for another major site.
Choose Danxia for landscape, not a filter
The colourful Danxia hills change with light, cloud and recent weather, and photographs may exaggerate their saturation. Visit for the layered landforms and scale as much as the palette. Use official viewing routes and transport, never stepping onto protected slopes for a closer picture. Select a few viewpoints with time to look properly instead of moving continuously between every platform on the circuit.
Keep another landscape optional
Binggou’s more sculptural formations offer a different excursion for travellers staying longer, while a short visit may be better served by an easy city morning. Do not assume neighbouring scenic areas share an entrance or shuttle system. Check distances and return arrangements before extending the day. Leaving a little unused time is helpful when wind, rain or a delayed train changes plans across the corridor.

Try sao mian or another local wheat-noodle preparation between visits, and ask about broth and toppings. Regional lamb dishes can be shared, but portions vary. Discuss meat, chilli and dairy requirements clearly before ordering a full meal.
Before you go.
Confirm whether your train uses Zhangye or Zhangye West and match accommodation to your onward route. Danxia viewpoints are outside the city and can be exposed to sun and wind. Check current park transport and closures, and carry drinking water and layers.
